Eco sapiens

October 23 theme

Introduction

For the 21st edition of the Quebec Waste Reduction Week (QWRW), we invite you to observe and discover the Eco sapiens with us. We define the Eco sapiens as a being that coexists with their ecosystem in a wise, smart, reasonable and harmonious way. This is a being of the future. They favour ethical, eco-friendly, fair, sustainable and inclusive products and practices and use their knowledge and intellect for nature and the common good.

We can ask ourselves: “where do these traits that are lacking in modern Homo sapiens come from?” From an evolutionary standpoint, Homo sapiens have difficulty sacrificing luxury for the sake of the common good, whereas Eco sapiens are allocentric and ecocentric. They’re able to partially or completely give up their wants if they harm the needs and survival of others and the environment.

Eco sapiens develop empathy toward all living beings. This allows them to work with others for a common goal: creating a human society in perfect harmony with nature.

The Eco sapiens’ knowledge

All Eco sapiens have one thing in common: they are very introspective. Every Eco sapiens is able to understand their needs and identify what will help meet them. Better yet, members of the Eco sapiens society are capable of collective introspection, and they can identify what practices will ensure the well-being of society as a whole, today and tomorrow.

In doing so, Eco sapiens have understood that:

  • We need to live in symbiosis with ecosystems; if we take care of the environment, it will take care of us in return.
  • We don’t own the planet; we are its tenants. And all the other living beings we share ecosystems with are our co-tenants. Because of this, we have to accept certain responsibilities, or else we’ll be evicted. We need to respect our co-tenants, share communal spaces, take care of our habitat and develop a healthy and sustainable relationship with our co-tenants.
  • We need to reduce our consumption as of today so that future generations will be able to meet their basic needs. Therefore, we need to think and differentiate between needs and wants, well-being and comfort, responsibility and freedom.
  • We need to:

    • Ensure that the needs of all humans—of today and tomorrow—are met before fulfilling non-primary and frivolous wants.
    • Guarantee the well-being of all humans before the luxury of some.
    • Fulfill our responsibility to the environment and society before enjoying our personal freedom.

It’s clear to the Eco sapiens that the ecological transition requires a social revolution. The earth and environment are one of the rare things we all have in common; protecting them must therefore be a common and societal project. It becomes apparent that we need to unite and work together toward sustainable consumption. That’s why Eco sapiens get to the core of the matter:

  • They’re respectful, open-minded and empathetic to the needs and values of their peers;
  • They put social interaction and kindness back at the heart of youth education;
  • They’re actively involved in their community and encourage sharing among its members;
  • They fight to end local, provincial and global social and economic inequalities.

The rise of Eco sapiens and their vision of a just and supportive society is the first step toward an inclusive and successful ecological transition.

How to recognize Eco sapiens?

Eco sapiens already walk among us. Have you ever seen someone set aside their wants for the well-being of others? Have you seen someone give their time to help their fellow citizens or the environment? Have you seen someone question their values and habits for the common good? All these people are Eco sapiens and leaders of a healthy and sustainable community.

Perhaps YOU are part of this group! Have you changed your diet to make it more eco-friendly? Have you recently stopped using the car for certain trips? Have you questioned your employer’s practices to make them more sustainable? Have you changed your vacation plans to reduce their environmental impact? Have you been more active in your community or gotten involved at your children’s school? Have you talked with your loved ones to challenge their worldview?

All of these actions are specific to the Eco sapiens, and if you’ve done some of these things, you may have already started your evolution!

The Eco sapiens’ personalities

Over the next few days, keep contemplating with us what makes people Eco sapiens. From October 24 to 31, we’ll delve into each of the 8 personalities of the Eco sapiens, and we’ll pave the way together toward an Eco sapiens society that is sustainable and considerate. Get to know our tools; they’ll help you push your thinking and actions even further. Stay alert! Your municipality, school or organizations near you might organize activities and events that shed light on the Eco sapiens.
